Volunteer Training
A variety of training was provided for the volunteers covering the various tasks where relevant.
There was set training every spring for the survey volunteers, covering the survey methodology, wildflower identification and health and safety. In addition, there was ‘shadow training’ where any of the survey volunteers could spend time shadowing the appointed consultants carrying out site surveys, honing their wildflower identification and survey skills.
Habitat management training was more practical hands-on training, including a few Austrian scythe training sessions at our Riverside Park, Ballymoney site. Which not only provided training in the maintenance and safe use of Austrian scythes, it also cut and lifted the meadow and was a great public engagement tool with the other park users. The project also provided a one-day native bee identification and habitat training day.
Where it came to helping with events, talks and activities, individual guidance was given tailored to the specific activity, and a member of the project team was present to support the volunteers.
