Management Options

Once the steering group and consultants had agreed the initial suite of sites; 24 road verges equalling approximately 180km and 18 areas within Council parks, a baseline survey was undertaken at all the sites by Allen & Mellon. This baseline survey was then used to develop the individual management options for each of the sites and further fine-tune the DMLIG biodiversity survey methodology.

The management options were developed to be very simple documents which give a brief description of the site, the best time to survey, and when best to cut and lift the grass. This simple template was developed to be understood by anyone and can be implemented by the existing staff. Another factor taken into account when developing these documents, was that neither DfI Roads nor the Council are conservation organisations and have other primary functions so the management of the sites had to be simple.
